How to Support a Veteran During the Holiday Season and Winter Months

How to Support a Veteran During the Holiday Season and Winter Months

The holidays can be difficult for veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The cold winter months and the lack of resources can add stress to an already emotionally trying season. Pittsburgh winters are harsh, and homeless veterans face additional risks during the winter time, such as exposure, hypothermia, frostbite, and other injuries due to the cold weather.

This is why it’s essential to support our veterans during this time, so they have access to the necessary resources to keep themselves warm, safe, and healthy.

Ways to Support Veterans During the Winter Months

  • Donate winter clothes and blankets. The cold winter months can be extremely harsh, especially for those without a home to turn to to keep warm. Providing coats, hats, gloves, and other clothing items is crucial to helping veterans stay safe during this time of year. Additionally, donating blankets can help them stay warm during the night. Veterans Place accepts new items to provide to the homeless veterans that we serve.
  • Volunteer with us at Veterans Place or at a local veteran’s shelter or resource center. Donating your time to organizations that provide resources and support for our veterans is an invaluable way to help those in need during the holiday season.
  • To drop off donations or learn more about volunteer opportunities at Veterans Place, stop by Monday-Friday between 9am-3pm or contact Emma Hardacre at Ehardacre@veteransplaceusa.org.
