Why Do We Celebrate Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 to honor all American veterans. This is a day where we reflect and honor the sacrifices that have been made by the heroic men and women of our Armed Forces. It is a time to honor those who have served our country honorably during war or peacetime.

In the United States, there is an official wreath-laying ceremony held at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider every Veterans Day at the Arlington National Cemetery. Parades and other celebrations are also held throughout the country.

Why is Veterans Day on November 11?

In 1918, on the 11th day of the 11th month, at the 11th hour, an armistice, known as a temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between Germany and the Allied nation during World War 1. The following year this day was commemorated throughout various countries as Armistice Day. In 1938, Armistice Day was declared a federal holiday in the United States.

Veterans’ service organizations lobbied in 1954 to have the 1938 act amended, changing the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. This legislation was signed on June 1, 1954, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
